Are you ready for a disaster? It is a question we like to ask a lot, given our role to support emergency response volunteering efforts in Maine.

One way to learn how to be better prepared is to attend the Eastern Maine Emergency Preparedness Expo on Saturday, Sept. 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor. There will be lots of great information for individuals, families and businesses on how to be better prepared for emergencies and disasters. Plus, September is FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) National Disaster Preparedness Month.

Volunteer Maine will be one of the exhibitors at this year's expo. Stop by our booth to learn about our role in the state's emergency response plan. We will also have information on how to best utilize Maine Ready, the state's emergency response volunteerism platform, which provides agencies a virtual way to coordinate offers of help with on-the-ground needs for assistance.

The Expo is free to the public. Free Parking will be available at the parking garage at the nearby casino as well as behind the Cross Center. Attendees can enter to win door prizes, and there will be also be a Sept. 11 Memorial Service at 1:00 p.m. Maine First Responder Day is also observed on Sept. 11.
