The United Way of Eastern Maine (UWEM) has spent the last five years steadily growing its capacity to successfully engage and retain volunteers through the Volunteer Center in a variety of programs and initiatives. These programs and initiatives include the Service Enterprise Initiative, the Volunteer Coordinator's Network, VolunteerME (VolunteerME.unitedwayem.org) the volunteer matching website, and Volunteer Services, such as Days of Caring, short-term, long-term, and skills-based volunteerism, and linking corporate partners service goals with employee volunteer programs.

With Maine VGF funding UWEM is generating at least 225 new volunteers to strengthen the organization's volunteer capacity building efforts across its entire service area of Penobscot, Piscataquis, Washington, Waldo, and Hancock counties. This five-county area represents a vast rural area with many non-profit organizations that rely on volunteers to help fulfill their mission. With this augmented volunteer force, UWEM targets and enhances outreach to organizations providing services in the target areas of aging in place, transportation, and food security. Through the growth of these civic engagement services offered by UWEM, these organizations are able to significantly increase their program capacity, service delivery, sustainability, and show measurable impact in the communities they serve.
