Public Information & Education Task Force

Regular Monthly Work Session

Present: Mike Ashmore, Doug Horner, Jamie Logan, John Portela, Maria Staples

Social Media Update

  • Kristyn Brownell, Social media contractor with the Commission, briefed the task force on her social media efforts. Monthly themes for social media will be supplemented with current news. A suggestion was made to work more about Senior Corps into the social media posts. And to also include VGF grantee profiles.
  • Group was updated on the changes to the Gov Service Awards & how they differ from the Adult & Youth Roles of Honor and the new timing for the GSA’s.

Congressional Program Visits

  • Goal is for them to take place before the end of April. John offered to reach out to all four members of the delegation about the visits.

National Service Day at The State House - March 6th

  • Commissioners are encouraged to join MCCS staff and funded programs at the event and are encouraged to speak with representatives of the programs that have displays in the Hall of the Flags as well as to speak with legislators who come by.

Rebrand Discussion

  • Branding and re-branding have been discussed by prior Commissioners and was a topic during the 2016 Commissioner Retreat
  • A rebrand was determined to be a good idea, but there is no directive or direction on the rebrand itself. For example, “Volunteer Maine” hasn’t been officially decided on.
  • Discussions were held in the past with Nancy Marshall, but the cost for her to lead the rebrand was prohibitive. Commission might also review the work done by former MCCS staff member Cecily Cook, who presented on branding to the Commission
  • Task force members were asked to reach out to people they know who might be able to lead a rebrand exercise/guided discussion for the full commission.

Other Items

  • As of March, Jamie will be stepping down as chair of PIE. New chair is yet to be determined.
