The American Association of State Service Commissions (also known as America’s Service Commissions-ASC) is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that is dedicated to advancing service and volunteerism in the United States.
ASC works on behalf of a network of commission members and staff, who promote and represent all of the streams of national and community service.
AmeriCorps, a federal agency, brings people together to tackle the country’s most pressing challenges, through national service and volunteering. AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers serve with organizations dedicated to the improvement of communities. AmeriCorps helps make service to others a cornerstone of our national culture.
Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) and the Commission for Community Service co-chair the state Donations Coordination Team which activates during response and recovery to emergencies and disasters.
Together the agencies connect donations of supplies, talent and time, as well as funds with the organizations on the ground helping people cope with and recover from community emergencies.
The Maine Masonic Charitable Foundation seeks to provide support for individuals in need, build strong, inclusive communities in Maine and to enrich the lives of all Maine residents. The Foundation partners with the Commission to recognize, promote, and support youth-led service in Maine communities. It annually provides funds for small grants under the Commission Semester of Service, Summer of Service, and Martin Luther King Day of Service grant program.
Maine Volunteer Foundation: The mission of the Maine Volunteer Foundation is foster civic engagement and volunteering that addresses human, educational, and environmental needs throughout Maine by augmenting the public resources of the Maine Commission for Community Service. The Commission was authorized in 2015 to establish an exclusive relationship with a private support organization and the Maine Volunteer Foundation received its nonprofit IRS designation in 2016.
Service Year Alliance. Service Year Alliance is a national organization that seeks to make a year of service a common expectation and opportunity for all young Americans as a way to tackle important community challenges while transforming their own lives.
Volunteer Maine was a founding partner with Service Year on its technology that allows young people to connect with service year opportunities, track their accomplishments, build evidence of skills, and establish links to people and organizations committed to service. While AmeriCorps offers service year opportunities, it differs in that it has part time options for service and it targets people older than the Service Year audience.
In 2013, the Commission partnered with Points of Light Institute and six other states in the national roll out of Service Enterprise. The organizational change process leads nonprofit and public agencies through a planning and development program that significantly increases their productivity, impact, and efficiency. As of 2014, the Commission provides the license for all Maine Service Enterprise activity and supports 18 trainers working with local agencies.
